How to Print Specific Pages in a Word Document with Sections
If page numbering restarts in each section of a Word document, specify both the page number and section number when printing a range. For example, p1s2 selects page 1 of section 2, and p1s2-p2s2 selects pages 1–2 of that section.
This guide covers the desktop version of Word for Windows. Menu names and positions can differ between versions.
Distinguish page numbers from section numbers
The second physical sheet is not necessarily the page labeled 2. A cover or contents section followed by restarted numbering can create several pages labeled 1 in different sections.
| Section | Displayed page numbers |
|---|---|
| Section 1 | 1, 2, 3, … |
| Section 2 | 1, 2, 3, … |
| Section 3 | 1, 2, 3, … |
Entering only 1 or 1-2 in such a document may not select the intended section’s pages. Put the displayed page number after p and the section number after s to distinguish the target.
Print a specific page or range
- Confirm the displayed page number and section of the target, then open File → Print.
- Enter the range in the Pages or custom-print field. Use p1s2 for page 1 in section 2.
- For a consecutive range, join the start and end with a hyphen. Use p1s2-p2s2 for pages 1–2 in section 2.
- Check the printer and range before printing. For a document that is easy to misinterpret, first print the same range to a PDF printer or make a small test print and inspect the selected content.
| Target | Range to enter |
|---|---|
| Page 1 in section 2 | p1s2 |
| Pages 1–2 in section 2 | p1s2-p2s2 |
Find the current section
- Right-click Word’s status bar.
- Enable the Section item.
- Place the cursor on the page you intend to print and inspect the section shown in the status bar alongside its displayed page number.
Editing can change pagination even within a section. Check the current saved document rather than relying on an earlier page layout, and do not infer the section solely from the number printed in its header.
