Minecraft Efficiency Enchantment: Tools, Mining Speed, and Efficiency V
Efficiency is a Minecraft enchantment that increases a tool's speed when breaking appropriate blocks. Its normal Survival maximum is Efficiency V, making it useful for repeated tasks such as mining, chopping wood, and clearing ground. Actual performance depends on the tool material, target block, and status effects, so Efficiency V does not produce one universal speed multiplier.
Efficiency levels and mining speed
The numerals from Efficiency I to V identify enchantment levels, not your player experience level. Choosing a level-30 enchanting option does not produce a level-30 Efficiency enchantment or guarantee Efficiency V. The official enchantment list describes Efficiency as increasing mining speed and lists V as its maximum.
Higher levels help break suitable blocks faster. However, Efficiency should not be described as a fixed percentage increase that applies to every tool. The tool's base performance, block hardness, and mining conditions matter together.
For example, the same enchanted pickaxe does not take the same time to break stone and obsidian. First check whether the tool is appropriate for the block. The official Bedrock digger documentation separately describes block-specific destruction speeds and the use of Efficiency.
Applicable tools and useful tasks
Common applicable tools include pickaxes, axes, shovels, and hoes. Java Edition also supports Efficiency on shears. Material differences affect a tool's base performance and, where relevant, which resources it can harvest.
| Tool | Typical task | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Pickaxe | Mining stone, ores, and obsidian | Use a material capable of harvesting the resource. Efficiency does not replace the required harvesting tier. |
| Axe | Removing logs and wood-related blocks | A useful priority for frequent logging or dismantling wooden builds. |
| Shovel | Clearing dirt, sand, and gravel | Fast clearing can remove more blocks than intended; keep your work area controlled. |
| Hoe | Removing leaves, hay bales, and other suitable blocks | Efficiency does not accelerate crop growth or increase yields by tilling soil. |
| Shears — Java Edition | Breaking appropriate blocks with shears | Do not assume identical enchantment support in Bedrock Edition. |
The official hoe changes confirm Efficiency support and examples of suitable blocks. Choose the tool that matches your frequent tasks rather than trying to make one enchanted tool perform every job.
Haste and instant mining depend on conditions
Instant mining refers to breaking a block within a very short single mining update under the relevant conditions. Efficiency and the mining-speed effect Haste can make this possible for some blocks. A particular pair of enchantment and effect levels does not guarantee instant mining for every block.
Consider tool material, Efficiency level, Haste level, and the target block together. A condition suitable for an easily broken block cannot automatically be used for a much harder block. Do not prepare equipment based on a rule such as “Efficiency IV or higher instantly breaks everything.”
The environment matters too. Underwater mining, being off the ground, and effects such as Mining Fatigue can make work slower. For underwater work, consider a separate helmet enchantment such as Aqua Affinity; Efficiency should not be assumed to remove every environmental penalty.
If a beacon provides Haste, check that the effect is active where you are working. Before clearing a large area, try a few blocks under the same conditions to assess speed and tool suitability. On a server, latency or server performance can also make blocks disappear late or appear to return after breaking.
How to make an Efficiency V tool
You can obtain Efficiency at an enchanting table or transfer it from an enchanted book using an anvil. If you need the highest level, read the levels actually present on your books and tools, then decide whether combining them is necessary.
- Prepare a suitable tool and enchanting setup. Choose a tool material you intend to use regularly, and prepare lapis and experience. Fifteen ordinary bookshelves in valid positions unlock high-level options, but do not guarantee Efficiency V.
- Check existing enchantments. An enchanting table works with unenchanted equipment or ordinary books. Use an anvil to add effects or raise an existing tool's enchantment level.
- Combine matching levels. Two Efficiency IV books can produce an Efficiency V book. An Efficiency IV tool can also be combined with an Efficiency IV book; inspect the output to confirm level V.
- Review the result and cost. Check that the desired level and existing enchantments are retained and that you can pay the experience cost. Repeated anvil operations can become expensive, so avoid combining low-level materials without considering the work history.
The official anvil guide explains applying book enchantments to tools. The enchanting table and anvil guide covers preparation, bookshelf placement, and required versus consumed experience levels.
If you acquire books through librarian trades, inspect the level actually offered and the world's settings. The Villager Trade Rebalance experiment is distinguished in official update notes, so experimental and ordinary trading environments should not be treated as one acquisition strategy.
Combine Efficiency with drops and durability effects
Efficiency does not increase drop quantities. Separating speed from the items you collect makes equipment choices clearer. Fortune and Silk Touch conflict with each other in normal Survival enchanting, but Efficiency can coexist with either one.
| Combination | Typical use |
|---|---|
| Efficiency + Fortune | Break applicable ores faster while improving resource drops. |
| Efficiency + Silk Touch | Quickly retrieve eligible ores or other blocks in block form. |
| Efficiency + Unbreaking | Manage durability consumption while processing many blocks. |
| Efficiency + Mending | Restore durability with experience so the tool can remain in use. |
Efficiency itself does not add a durability surcharge for every block mined. When you normally break the same number of the same block type, do not calculate extra per-block wear simply because Efficiency is present. Breaking more blocks in less time can make the durability bar appear to fall faster over time.
Unbreaking helps reduce durability consumption; Mending repairs through experience. Both can help maintain a fast mining tool, but Mending does not provide automatic repairs without an experience supply.
If an Efficiency tool still feels slow
- Tool type: Check the match between block and tool, such as a pickaxe for stone and an axe for logs. An Efficiency pickaxe is not an effective answer to every block.
- Material and level: Check the base tool and the displayed I–V enchantment level. Compare tools on the same block under the same conditions.
- Effects and position: Verify that Haste is active, check for Mining Fatigue, and consider whether you are underwater or off the ground.
- Your goal: If you want extra diamonds or crop items, distinguish Efficiency's speed benefit from Fortune's eligible drop effects.
Start by improving a tool you use often, then add durability support and environmental preparation for larger mining or building projects. Even with a high-level tool, define the area you intend to remove before fast clearing begins.
